Foundation & patrons

The “Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia/Biofisika Bizkaia Fundazioa” (FBB) was created in 2007. Due to the needs generated by the growth of the UBF, and the implementation of the new Basque Science Policies, it was necessary to thrust the UBF programs by channeling in funds and management support to allow an articulate and smooth performance of the activities developed in the Unit, and favour their translation into society. Thus, in 2007 the creation of the “Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia/Biofisika Bizkaia Fundazioa” (FBB) was agreed. The main aim of FBB was to support the sustainable development of Biophysics Research in Biscay and in Spain, by promoting, performing, supporting, and funding research activities, as well as training graduate students and broadcasting the progress and discoveries in the area of biophysics. Furthermore, a central goal of the FBB support, aligned with the Basque Science Policy and Regional Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation, has been to promote a translational frontier research program that leads to the generation of innovation in the areas of biomedicine and biotechnology. This appears essential for the consolidation of a sustainable economic growth that results in an increase in social wealth.

Since 2009, FBB is listed as a Basque Excellence Research Centre (BERC) by the Department of Education of the Basque Government with the aim of promoting research in the area of biophysics.
