Dr. Israel S. Fernandez will join the IBF as Ikerbasque Research Professor

Dr. Israel S. Fernandez will join the IBF as an Ikerbasque Research Professor in September 2023. Dr. Fernandez is an expert in cryo-EM based structural biology of protein-RNA complexes. While at the laboratory of the Nobel laureate Dr. Venki Ramakrishna at the LMB-MRC in Cambridge, Dr. Fernandez pioneered the elucidation of high-resolution cryo-EM structures of complete ribosomes that resulted in several seminal publications. As a group leader at Columbia University and St. Jude´s hospital in the US he has continued to make important contributions to understand the structural basis of RNA biology, from ribosomes to CRISPR/Cas. At the IBF he will stablish a research group focused on elucidating the ribosome contribution to the genomic expansion of retrotransposons in the human genome.
